April 6th-13th, 2007: First time in Buenos Aires after 35 years
Flying to Buenos Aires on April 5th, arriving on April 6th in the morning ... touching South-American ground again !!! Here a view of Buenos Aires from our airplane ... quite a cosy little village ;-)
We've been picked-up by Mariana and - nicely - she drove us to the hotel ... here the obelisk on the Avenida 9 de Julio ...
Here our hotel ... wonderful!
After a bottle of champagne in the hotel we made a walk to the cementary of La Recoletta ... very impressive.
The first night we had dinner in a typical Argentine restaurant, the "Hard Rock Café" ... from left to right Toni, Pablo, Debbie, Thomas, Cynthia, Roxanna, Agustina, Mariana.
Saturday morning, we were picked up by Juan Manuel and Sylvia to visit Auntie Dorothy ... seeing them all after 35 years again! We enjoyed empanadas for lunch. Standing: Thomas, Carlos, Juan Manuel, Agustin, Santiago, Carolina. Front row: Sylvia, Dorothy, Cynthia
In the afternoon we started some sightseeing ... here the old school of Cynthia ...
... and stopped for a view to the Rio de La Plata ...
... on our way to the Tigre ... here Juan Manuel, Syliva, Cynthia and Thomas ...
... and here the boathouse of Juan Manuel's rowing club, where we had a nice break ...
... having a drink in the heat!
In the evening we had a wonderful tango show at the hotel ... accompanied by a bottle of champagne ...
... here some dancers.
Sunday morning, Mariana picked us up for a trip to the countryside ... having an asado ... and meeting Cynthia's auntie Tetel.
Monday, we walked into the city, here the Torre de los Ingleses ...
... further on the shopping street Calle Florida, here the Galeria Pacifico ...
... having lunch at the "Palacio de las Papas Fritas" (French Fries Palace ;-) ... still basically the same as 35 years ago!
On the way home, we wondered about "high-speed pursuit police cars" ...
This evening we met Pichon, a sound engineer and old friend of Cynthia ... he won two Grammys and we were in a special (!) Italian restaurant.
We finished that day off with a drink in the hotel ... here you see Cynthia's new leather jacket ... relatively cheap in Argentina.
Next day, Tuesday, we made a tour through the city ... here the Cabildo, the building where Argentina declared independance ...
... Thomas was reminded of his youth (long ago, haha), when he saw good old German engineering again ...
... we stopped in La Boca with its colourful houses ... the old Italian immigrants quarter in Buenos Aires ...
... and finally met Dorothy and Sylvia again.
Next day, we went to Cynthia's old house in Martinez ... nearly everything was as 35 years ago ...
... here Cynthia in front of the house ...
... we saw the old school in Martinez (in a very poor condition), where Cynthia spent the first three years ...
... and even an old cafe was still there and we had a coffee.
In the evening, we met Noni, an old friend of Cynthia's and had a nice dinner in a steak restaurant ... the small steaks were even bigger than you could imagine!
Thursday night, our last night, we celebrated our 13-month-anniversary in the "Tomo I", the best (?) restaurant of Buenos Aires ... a wonderful meal and a wonderful way to finish this trip.
We would like to thank everybody in Buenos Aires for their wonderful hospitality and we hope to see them in Germany one day!
